The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

A bit of a tenuous link with Forearm Tattoos, but I thought I would share with you a good thriller that I have just finished – The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Steig Larsson (winner of the British Book Awards, Best Crime Thriller of the Year, 2009).

I am not what you would call a book connoisseur or acclaimed critic, but I thought the book was a gripping, rip roaring crime novel, which I found difficult putting down (resulting in quite a few late nights – yawn).  Apparently the second book is even better – great.  This is how Amazon sums up the story …

Forty years ago, Harriet Vanger disappeared from a family gathering. Her body was never found, yet her uncle is convinced it was murder – and that the killer is a member of his own family. He employs journalist Mikael Blomkvist and the tattooed, truculent computer hacker Lisbeth Salander to investigate.

When the pair link Harriet’s disappearance to a number of grotesque murders from forty years ago, they begin to unravel a dark and appalling family history. But the Vangers are a secretive clan, and Blomkvist and Salander are about to find out just how far they are prepared to go to protect themselves.

Sadly the authour did not live to see the worldwide phenomenon his trilogy has become.

Personally, I think a fair rating for the book overall is four out of five.

Inner Forearm Tattoos

Inner Forearm Tattoos, when being applied, can be sore and uncomfortable.  If you are worried about this, look around at how many people have them – they have all survived, so it can’t be that bad.
 
On a serious note though, the Inner Forearm is a very sensitive area, and Inner Forearm Tattoos can be sore and cause significant bruising, swelling and/or inflamation. 
 
Infections or allergic reactions are rare, if you have concerns following the tattoo procedure then seek medical advice immediately.
 
If you have just had a Tattoo, remember, the amount of ink that remains in the skin throughout the healing process determines, in large part, how robust the final tattoo will look.  There are many products that can be applied to the tattoo area to help with the healing process.  These healing products are mostly oil based ointments as they keep the skin hydrated.  
 
In general, the advice is against removing scabs that forms on new tattoos, and avoiding exposing the tattoo to the sun for extended periods; both of these can contribute to fading of the image. 
Also, it is agreed that all new tattoos needs to be kept clean.  The general consensus is that good old soap and warm water will keep the skin clean and free from infection.
 
Sometimes when a blood vessel is punctured during the tattooing procedure (maybe the needle has gone in too far) a bruise will appear.  Bruising and swelling should go away, but if you are concerned, we would suggest going back to your artist or visit the doctor to have a look at it.

Designing Your Own Tattoo

We would first recommend not tattooing yourself – if you do the chances that you will end up with a messy collection of scar tissues is quite high.

Creating and making your own tattoo designs, which are then put on by a professional, can be a fulfilling and even a spiritual exercise.

Decide where you want to put the tattoo on your body, some tattoos work better on different parts of the body.  The scale of the tattoo should also be considered.  A timid tattoo may be lost on the forearm or middle of the back and a large blackwork design may not look right when placed on the ankle.  

Even if you are making your own design, we would recommend some internet research  to find some designs to try against your body, just to get an idea of positioning, scale and colour.

Then with the use of a bit of tracing paper, start putting some design ideas down on paper.

When you have come up with a design you are happy with hide it away and forget about it for a while.  If you still like it when you dig it out, youcould tray a temporary tattoo based on your design.

If the design is still right on you (and obviously doesnt just apply to forearm tattoos), then make a decision and head on down to the best reputable tattooist in your area and make it permanent.

How to Remove a Forearm Tattoo

I don’t want to put you off having a forearm tattoo – but you may want to just see what is involved if you change you mind (or you suffer from an allergic reaction).

While your forearm tattoo would be considered permanent, it is sometimes possible to remove them, fully or partially, by a dermatologic surgeon on an outpatient basis with local anesthesia.

The most common techniques used for tattoo removal are:

Laser surgery
A tattoo could be removed by selectively treating the pigment colors with a high-intensity laser beam.  Lasers are now the standard treatment as they offer a non-surgical and highly effective approach with minimal side effects.

Surgical excision
A surgeon could remove the tattoo with a scalpel and then bind the wound using stitches.

Dermabrasion
This involves the “sanding” of the skin to remove the surface and middle layers of the tattoo.

Side effects
Side effects may include varying degrees of skin discoloration, possible infection of the tattoo area, lack of complete pigment removal, or some scarring. A raised or thickened scar may appear three to six months after the tattoo is removed.

The expense and pain of removing your forearm tattoos will typically be greater than the expense and pain of applying them.
